What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 113 active compounds found in the hemp plant called cannabinoids. It works naturally to reduce anxiety, pain, and sleep issues without any mind altering effects or "high" for the person using it.
How It Works
A Natural Connection
The human body's endocannabinoid system consists of tiny receptors that play a key role in regulating mood, pain and everyday experience. CBD helps these receptors do what's needed in order to stimulate all kinds of beneficial changes throughout the body. You could even say our bodies are hard-wired to benefit from CBD.
Full Spectrum Vs. CBD Isolate
A More Effective Approach
Full spectrum–or whole plant–CBD is so called because it contains all forms of cannabinoid available in the plant, whereas Isolate CBD only contains Cannabidiol.
Due to what’s known as the “entourage effect,” full spectrum CBD is considered to be much more effective.
HOW CBD IS BEING STUDIED & USED
FDA has approved Epidiolex, which contains a purified form of CBD for the treatment of seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or Dravet syndrome in patients 1 years of age and older. It has also approved Epidiolex for the treatment of seizures associated with tuberous sclerosis complex in patients 1 year of age or older. That means FDA has concluded that this particular drug product is safe and effective for its intended use.
Chronic pain represents an emerging public health issue of massive proportions, particularly in view of aging populations in industrialized nations. Physicians are seeking new approaches to treatment of these conditions concerned about prescription drug abuse or diversion. The entry of cannabinoid medicines to the pharmacopoeia offers a novel approach to the issue of chronic pain management, offering new hope to many.
Multiple studies have used different forms of CBD when investigating whether CBD is an effective treatment for PTSD. Some studies have used topical CBD, such as oils, and other studies have used edible CBD. A 2019 study found that people with PTSD who took CBD capsules alongside traditional counseling saw a reduction in their symptoms. A 2016 study found that CBD oil applied to the skin effectively treated anxiety and sleeping problems in a child with PTSD. A 2018 literature review suggests that a combination of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD may help treat PTSD symptoms.
Experts believe that CBD’s potential benefits for depression are related to its positive effect on serotonin receptors in the brain. Low serotonin levels are likely connected to depression. CBD doesn’t necessarily boost serotonin levels, but it may affect how your brain’s chemical receptors respond to the serotonin that’s already in your system. A recent 2018 review of existing studies concluded that CBD has anti-stress effects, which may reduce depression related to stress. As mentioned, this is an area that’s still being actively studied, and new research and reviews are published every year.
“CBD oil has shown promise as a treatment for both depression and anxiety, leading many who live with these disorders to become interested in this natural approach.”
“The National Institutes of Health database lists about 150 of studies involving CBD as a treatment for conditions as varied as infantile spasms and Parkinson’s disease.”
